• Context
  • NYC Bird Alliance is working with the City Council on legislation to make NYC safer for migrating birds.
  • Intro 0998 would reduce unnecessary nighttime lighting in commercial and office buildings.
• The problem
  • Artificial light at night can disorient migrating birds and draw them toward buildings.
  • Birds can then collide with windows and other structures.
  • Nearly 250,000 birds die from building collisions in NYC each year.
• Why it matters
  • Migration is happening all around us, including right here in NYC.
  • Reducing unnecessary nighttime lighting is a simple way to reduce a major threat to migrating birds.
  • Less unnecessary lighting also means less wasted energy and light pollution.

• Contact your City Council Member and ask them to support Intro 0998.
