The majesty of a bald eagle

Todays eagle sighting showed power , majesty and beauty. On my workday with volunteers, i was witness to these elements.

My ongoing project weeding the dense growth on south slope Lookout Hill put me in the right place this morning. Seeing several people looking up Lookout Hill's slope alerted me they got the eagle. And moving out to the Well Drive, along with some of my volunteers, we saw the Bald Eagle perched at the highest point of a tree above the three shipping containers. The eagle displayed Power and majesty .

Then after my work was done at noon with the volunteers, i drove through the Nethermead on route to my storage container and on the way , I saw more birders looking up. This time it was in the direction of the pine grove at north Lookout at the edge of the meadow, and there it was, our "winter resident" eagle perched near the top of a giant pine, looking like a postcard setting. It was a beautiful display.

This eagle is giving all of us memorable moments.🐦

PS. Four Ring-necked Ducks -2 drake, 2 hen- were  seen near the northwest shore of prospect Lake; the drake Common Merganser continues from this morning, at the lake center, but its moving around.

I noted reddesh-brown flecks on the underwing and initially believed I was looking at a juvenile red-shouldered hawk. It made one counter-clockwise circle over me as if considering re-settling in the same perch. Made a couple wider circles over the east edge of Sylvan. I lost sight of it as it flew low over the NE corner of Sylvan, near cliff path."

Mega rare buteo hawk at greenwood cemetery

At mid-afternoon, a juvenile SWAINSONS HAWK was photographed on a low flyover after taking off from a yew tree at the southeast end of Sylvan Water.

Photod near Oak and Hillock avenues

The hawk's identification was confirmed by moderators of Whatsapp . Helps to have a photo if you can lug a camera around.
Congrats to Michael S. for his terrific find.

Much warmer ruddier tones to head and steeper forehead, in direct comparison with hen American Wigeons present on the scene. Warm tones of head essentially concolor with sides of bird. Distant photos below, last photo has Iceland Gull in foreground with Eurasian Wigeon just to the left. Spending most of its time in the weird tidal pool along the shoreline extending north from the base of the pier, at times also ranging out along the rocks on the food distribution pier (essentially the extension of 56th St.)"
