Fall surge in Prospect

A day marked by excellent activity and rare birds even a strange unexpected sighting made for a Prospect fall surge. Despite my work day and a quick trip to NYC for a hearing aid errand, nevertheless ,I have to say it was a great day for birders.

Rob Bate reported to me  between two birding groups going out today (BBC and Linnaean), 22 species warblers and 4 vireo species with numbers to boot plus rare birds birds hilighted Prospect' s day. A tame MOURNING WARBLER  with HOODED WARBLER right behind tops the warbler list. PHILADELPHIA VIREO hilighted the vireo genus. Then among sparrows though not rare for this time of year,a LINCOLN SPARROW seen early morning stuck around till the evening.

Starting with MOURNING WARBLER,the site to go was the Peninsula sumacs. After receiving Rob Bates Twitter Tweet on the G train as I was coming home above ground,I went for the bird. To my surprise, the bird was tame! From the sumacs mugwort edge ,the MOWA kept coming out to the lawn for excellent looks. HOODED WARBLER was seen well by multiple observers, cooperative in the southwest woods outside Quaker Cemetery.

ON Lookout Hill ,that's the scene for both LINCOLN SPARROW and PHILADELPHIA VIREO. LINCOLN,seen early morn (Dennis Hrehowsik) was first viewed on the south path just below the Butterfly Meadow.I spotted it early eve on the meadow' s south fence and path edge. PHILADELPHIA VIREO  was observe above the Maryland Monument by Mike Yuan.

And last, about the craziest bird in early fall I recalled,I spotted an all white breasted cormorant perched on the water snag of West Island in the waning light. Getting over there quickly, to my surprise, with two DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANTs, there's a 1st year juvenile GREAT CORMORANT( with the white belly).. Who would have thunk it ?

List.
