Celebrating its 116th census, the Christmas Bird Count has come a very long way from the 1900 first census started by Frank Chapman to protest the horrible Christmas day side hunts. Hunters shooting the most birds that day were claimed "victors" ,exacting terrible tolls on bird life.
Frank Chapman went on to become later in life curator of the hall of birds in the American Museum of Natural History.
So if you are a participant in tomorrow's count, cherish the long running ,storied and revered count, a glorious triumph of citizen grassroots activism for conservation and a benefit for science.
