The focus for good birds shifted from land to "sea", namely Prospect Lake. After a few days excitement with that " Thrush celebrity" , of which no reports today for "that bird" , the best reports were at Prospect Lake.
Highlighting the lake birds, a hen CANVASBACK appeared this morning , diving frequently in the northwest sector ( nearest toWellhouse) , among Ruddy Ducks. It could be the same bird from January though that's a stretch to say so. Canvasbacks are very rare here. A quick check revealed today's bird only the tenth Prospect record assuming if not January's bird. Just as rare, about 200 feet away , near the lake center, the HORNED GREBE (HOGR) continues its "residency" , in a long stretch for this species on a freshwater lake.We don't mind....( for the 11th such HOGR in Prospect's history )...making history here !
And in a beautiful moment, from my southern shore vantage point , in one view, the three merganser species were so close ! COMMON (hen) , RED-BREASTED (drake), and a a pair of HOODEDS were within 30 feet of each other, with the peninsula shelter in the backdrop. How is that for a serene morning moment ! ( wished I had a longer coffee break, though...)
