Prospect Slow day still yields good birds

Top birds PURPLE MARTIN and HOODED WARBLER brighten the day that was obviously slow compared to days past. Reports of warblers were scattered, sometimes a few good spots, led by an uptick of INDIGO BUNTINGS.

On the rare swallow, the PURPLE MARTIN was spotted overhead 3:30 ish near Bartel Pritchard by Tom Johnson, invited into Prospect by Doug Gochfeld. Tom was part of the NJ World Series team that won the high count for Cape Island (or Cape May) and a good friend of my old birding friend Glenn Davis who was his teammate.A great bird for Prospect.

I heard reports that the Esdale Bridge /Amber gill Creek was good in late afternoons. So I checked it out. I found Marvin photographing and I asked him what he had. "A BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER bathing in the creek". Sure enough, there is a gorgeous BLACKBURNIAN very close to the bridge. Soon , Maureen , Kathy T, Elyse joined in later, and some nice birds followed up, NORTHEN PARULA, ORIOLE, and then a good one showed : HOODED WARBLER. It,s not an easy bird to id though cause it was a 1st year female bird, without any black on it. Later, a female INDIGO BUNTING appeared.Nice spot, good timing for birds viewing.

Speaking of the last bird, several reports of INDIGO BUNTING were scattered in locations, Vale, Binnen Bridge and so on.

The Dawn Redwood at Binnen Falls had good action in early afternoon but devoid of birds when I got there late afternoon.It appears this tree is good at noon early on.I did observe behind the outlook a great looking WILSON's WARBLER in the Hornbeam Tree along the shore.Happy with the cooperative bird this time around.On way to the Lake, I observed a BELTED KINGFISHER in south Lull water.

Last, the lake is full of swallows. Best among the Barn Swallow dominated lot is a single BANK SWALLOW. Earlier, in the South Lull water, a lone NORTHERN ROUGH WINGED the fifth of  5 swallow species topping the hi lights today.
