Hi Peter,

We had a very enthusiastic group today; and a fairly birdy park to offer. Most of the birds seemed thinly spread out over all of the areas we visited, without too many really active "pockets" other than the vale, where a fruiting tree offered at least 3 Tennessee Warblers, Baltimore Oriole, Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Wilson's Warbler, and more.

Overall we had 16 species of warblers including Wilson's, Blackpoll, Prairie, and Tennessee. We also had a somewhat brief Philadelphia Vireo on Lookout.

The bird of the day may have been a Common Nighthawk probably spooked from its roost by a young Red-tailed Hawk.

Here's the list along with a Prairie Warbler shot.

Best regards,
Tom

Its Tennessee Valley in the Vale of Cashmere

Rafael Campos reported a terrific observation of 4 TENNESSEE WARBLERS feeding on the red Kusa Dogwood fruit in the Vale of Cashmere pool. When I heard about it from Rafael, I head staright there on my lunch hour. One I did find was a first year or or quick molted winter female feeding on the reddish pulpy fruit. The hyper bird was cgased a few times by some other birds, but kept coming back to the tree. It was probbaly one of two TEWA I observed before getting called to my office.

I know at least 11 species warblers were reported today on a warm day.

Hi Peter, Rob and Kathy,

We had 10 birders on the walk today, including 2 newcomers.  i didn't have a signup sheet but Janet gave them a BBC card and encouraged them to join ;-)

It was birdy, but not spectacular.  14 sp warbler.  I had an adult Bald Eagle flyover after the group had dispersed, that was cool.

Here's a pic Gus got of a female Indigo Bunting at Butterfly Meadow.

Rob: i will also post on F/B. :-)

Peter,

Fourteen birders met at the Pergola on a humid morning that saw an uptick in activity but the floodgates were not opened as wide as hoped. Hightlights were Solitary Sandpiper near west island, several veery, swainson’s thrush Scarlet Tanager plus 15 warbler species including Blackburnian and Willy’s. I may have missed a few. I think everyone had a fun time. I know I had one of the most fun days birding in a while.

Best,

Dennis

Watching the migration forecast unfold last night I decided to spend the first hour of light on the top of Lookout Hill in Prospect Park.
On the bike ride in I could hear occasional chip notes, but it didn't sound very active. Once on top of the hill it was obvious there were some new arrivals. Groups of Waxwings and Goldfinches headed south and at 6:35 there were already two American Kestrels hunting over the Butterfly Meadow (one successfully).
As the sun started to hit the tops of the trees songbirds became visible.

Highlights included;

Philadelphia Vireo
Scarlet Tanager
Baltimore Oriole
Rose-breasted Grosbeak

Northern Waterthrush
Black and White Warbler
Tennessee Warbler
Common Yellowthroat
American Redstart
Northern Parula
Magnolia Warbler
Black-throated Green Warbler
Wilson's Warbler
Blackpoll Warbler

Nighthawk fantasy

What was pretty much an uneventful day climaxed in the late afternoon ,early evening of COMMON NIGHTHAWK fantasy.

After some scattered sightings of warblers,Donna Evans and I were treated by a spectacle of 13 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS over the Maryland Monument. From our observation post at Peninsula meadow,we follow their aerial trail. The nighthawks kept appearing over us  to and fro from the Lullwater to Lookout Hill, sun gleamng off their stigmata like  white wing patches. Finally at the Nethermead we recounted carefully the same 13 nighthawks

But with achy legs from a long hard workday, I headed home arriving 6 pm. I didn't go back out. But a post from Peter Paul on Facebook Brooklyn Urban Birders reported he and his wife' s higher count of 22 birds!

I knew it was gonna be a good one.

My day list. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/email?subID=S24989381

Bad weather beats the good wind

Bad weather obviously beat the north wind last nite as today's numbers didn't commence.Who can blame the birds not wanting to come thru?

Lookout Hill's Butterfly meadow was the best offering as I spotted very briefly --under tight pre-work deadline--a great looking CANADA WARBLER in one of the Pin Oaks. A male AMERICAN REDSTART aslo appeared in the same tree. Linda Ewing on my lunch hour mentioned she had the NASHVILLE WARBLER in the elm grove , with CHESTNUT SIDED and MAGNOLIA WARBLERs joining in.

Other than two VEERYs I saw on my lunch hour in the Ravine and Tennis House area, that was it.

Always tomorrow to look forward to...

Report from Mike Yuan

Peter-

Not too much activity this morning, but it could mean a bonanza for the weekend.  Alie Ratay and I had a Tennessee Warbler on the mid-slope path between the Wellhouse and the MD Monument, in the same area, same dull light, and same neck-straining height as the one we saw during this past May's bird-a-thon!

bright nashville

On this very wet but much  needed rain morning , my bright bird was the NASHVILLE WARBLER.While digging out the pervasive porcelain berry vine, I noted some activity on Lookout Hill' s summit meadow.

First it was the BLACK THROATED GREEN WARBLER in an oak tree. Following that male adult, a BLACKPOLL WARBLER alighted on a Cupflower stalk to nibble. But then my NASHVILLE WARBLER flew down to the middle of the weedy dense meadow. Its a beaut, an adult bird in full view ,cooperating nicely for me to watch.

Prior to that small bird activity on the summit,I thought the dead ash tree at Butterfly Meadow was the highlight. It was full of AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES with a lone BALTIMORE ORIOLE at the zenith of the tree.

A north wind tonight: will it or will it not be a good one tomorrow? Find out...
