Prospect April 20th brisk day birds

Before summarizing today's reports, a link  from the NY Times about birders. Thanks to Janet Schumacher for sending

Worm eating Warbler, taken 220pm Friday by feeders site, by Heidi Clevens

A brisk very chilly day, starting off overcast before afternoon sun, obviously not best climate conditions for big bird movement but nevertheless birders will take today's hilights.Hi lighted by 7 LESSER SCAUP (with 6 hens) on the lake into the evening, settling in mostly at the west sector of the lake tops the birds for its number; land birds included in the Brooklyn Bird Club walk were White-eyed Vireo , moving about both sides of the Lullwater under the Terrace bridge. WHITE WINGED CROSSBILLs still lingering ( pending records search for lateness),the season's first Northern Waterthrush and Brown Thrasher ; other reports revealed Bank Swallow, Northern Raven , Pine Siskin, and swallows and swifts galore, especially in the evening as Chimney Swifts picked up over Lookout Hill's South slope.2 NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS were the best swallows in a trove of Tree and Barns over the lake, also seen up the southern Lullwater. Also, on Three Sisters, I saw 11 Double-crested Cormorants in a tight flock just above the water surface before 9 took off for travel.

CHIPPING SPARROWs are increasing in numbers, 25 seen (Russ Alderson) on the Breeze Hill lawn, a holdover from last eve's 30 seen by Kristin Costello by the MaryLand Monument.

And last, though not a rarity for a tweet from twitter, an unusual event. It isn't often , though the first I 've seen in either the park or the garden for this species. While in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Native Flora section, I observed a Red-breasted Nuthatch digging out a nest hole in a broken top large snag, half its bark is gone.Whether this nuthatch intends to or not, this is a nesting event in my book for this species.Look for the plant sign by the small creek "Lizards Tail" and look up the small slope. Hope it sticks around....

and last: in the latest NYC Rare Bird Alert, this midweek, someone reported a Virginia Rail by a flower pot in the BBGarden. Unfortunately whoever it was  seeing this rarity, wasn't in my digital network.Too bad....but keep an eye out for rails nowadays

From Tom Stephenson, leading BBC walk

Hi Peter,
We had a hardy group today for a fairly cool outing in the park. The birds were fairly quiet although we still ended up with 63 species.
The highlights were the White-eyed Vireo near the wellhouse and the White-eyed Vireo near the feeders...also Northern Waterthrush, Yellow Warbler, Turkey Vulture, Osprey, Brown Thrasher (brief..), Lesser Scaup; and the WW Crossbills are still up on lookout. We didn't make it to the southern end of the lake where the Bank Swallow had been seen, but had a good time studying the other 3 species including several Rough-winged.
Best regards,
Tom

Hello Peter,
Here are pictures I took on Tom's walk. The White-eyed Vireo put on a good show again (or multiple one's). I think at least 2 are around.
The worm eater evaded us. I hope it's still here.

Hi Peter, another fun walk today!  the threatening weather kept the faint-hearted away, but the rest of us were treated to Northern Waterthrush, White-eyed Vireo, Yellow Warbler, Brown Thrasher among others.

Adam Welz:

A bit late. Area around feeders/Breeze Hill was most productive. Lookout surprisingly dead.
Cheers Adam
