After a week or so absence from this spot, the VARIED THRUSH showed up at the Ambergill Pool /Creek area. Several Observers saw the bird reported near the Esdale Bridge at one point.Also with the thrush a RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on Butterfly meadow, PINE SISKINS and typical species around this time , BROWN CREEPER, WINTER WREN , YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and good numbers of GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET in Prospect, BBGarden and Greenwood Cemetery
WOOD DUCKS by the decade and other enjoyable duck species reported today.
Over at the BBGarden , a decent flock of DARK-EYED JUNCO on the lawn by the
Reflecting Pools; A SWAMP SPARROW at the Japanese Garden waterfall, not often a
birdy spot.
The season's first PALM WARBLER is in..indicating things should pick up...

Filmed them fetching seedballs on ground at Lookout. (Still there now)
Found my towhee on breeze hill again
1 yellow-rump just below lullwater bridge again
6 tree swallows
Tons of phoebes.

March 30 Greenwood Cemetery
Today was my second visit to GWC on the hunt to find some woodcocks (a lifer for me), and this time around, I was rewarded twice over with seeing not one but 2 WOODCOCKS together at Wintergreen path (between Dell and Vista Aves). I hung around that area and soon discovered it was hopping with activity: singing FOX SPARROWS, seemingly dozens of PINE SISKINS, and a few WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS.The WWXB were foraging for sweet gum balls on the ground, then would fly up onto a branch with one to extract the seeds. As I was spotting them in some higher branches, little did I know I was standing 3 feet away from a pair at eye level! They didn't seem to mind me or the photoshoot. They were joined by the ubiquitous robins, chickadees, juncos, white-throated and song sparrows, blue jays, red-bellied woodpeckers, etc. making for a sizable noisy flock. Two more surprises today were 3 separate flyovers by an OSPREY, and a DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT vigorously drying off its wings, both FOY I believe. Spring has sprung! The Warbler Guide by Tom Stephenson & Scott Whittle Presenter: Tom Stephenson | Tom became a birder at age 12, and grew up birding in Ithaca, NY under the tutelage of Dr. Arthur A. Allen and Dr. Peter Kellogg. He has gone on from there to publish articles and photos in Birding and Bird Watcher's Digest, at Surfbirds.com, and in the Handbook of the Birds of the World, to name a few. In the field, he has led birding groups in the US, South America and South Asia; including Bhutan, whose government engaged him to spend a month training local guides for their pristine country. He is an expert in digital audio editing and live sound mixing, a skill which he has applied to the recording and analysis of bird song. Cornell's Macaulay Library has received over 200 of his recordings. In July 2013, Princeton University Press will publish The Warbler Guide. |

Hi Peter,
We had a great group this morning, with 20+ people on a great sunny day.
It's interesting to see that the movements of migration are in effect even this early in the season, as many of the birds we saw on Tuesday were gone and overall the park was much slower.
However we were able to eventually find 50 species, with highlights including Pine and Yellow-rumped Warbler, Golden-crowned Kinglet, singing Fox Sparrow, nice Wood Duck pair, good looks at female Common Merganser, Ring-necked Duck, 6+ Tree Swallows, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Brown Creeper and more.

Prospect March 29th report
Some action over or in Duck Island : An OSPREY (obs Mike E)was patrolling that area , hunting for fish; meanwhile below on the Island, 2 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONs (obs . Dennis H) are in, hiding on their "treasure island"
The best sight for me was three nice duck species within a flock, 3 pairs each consisting of WOOD DUCKs, GADWALLs and HOODED MERGANSERs in the Upper Pool , within 15 feet of each other; the drake GADWALL lunged and "yapped" at the HOODED drake which I though was quite funny. For a slow day, anything for a laugh.
Other mentions since its ducks in the news, Mike reported 7 RING-NECKED s & Red-breasted Merganser ( which I saw 4 drakes late this morning )

Brooklyn is great birding!!!!
Osprey nest platform rises again...in another spot
My friend and Brooklyn environmentalist has done it again. In a second Osprey nest platform under his leadership and action, Bart Chezar is fulfilling conservation pro action for the local area. Joining the one at under development new park Bush Terminal Pier park, the second one has been erected at Governors Island Yankee Pier. You can see this spot from the Brooklyn Heights promenade.

Prospect March 28th a slow trickle
A very slow trickle of birds noted though salvaged by a brief appearance of the celebre VARIED THRUSH at the same usual spot; according to Janet Zinn the bird put in a quick 3 seconds looker perched on a limb and bye bye,vamoosh!
On my lunch hour ,hoping for Pine Warbler which I didn't get, though while crossing the Nethermead, 3 REDTAILED HAWKS were soaring ,then joined by 2 passing TURKEY VULTURES.
A nice sight as I was finishing up work were three GREAT BLUE HERONs flying ove the 9th Streeet Propagation area ( "Propsite" ) around 3pm.

Prospect March 27th the reappearance and a little rustiness
It's good to see that VARIED THRUSH decides to stick around, to allow those who haven't seen this elusive ultra rarity a chance to call it a life bird. A noon time report ( actually my lunch hour) indicated the VARIED 's brief appearance at 9 am this morning , spotted by Cindy Cage. It was just behind the fence in or under a fallen tree opposite a very large snag along the bridle path at Quaker's south slope, the usual and most favorable spot.Who knows? Maybe it will entertain birders into spring like the Central Park bird two years ago; then maybe it jump on a Jet Blue flight for Seattle..... ;)>

A pretty quiet day for birds, accentuated by the appearance of a RUSTY BLACKBIRD at the Lily Pool viewing platform. A text message from Peter Colen , with Bobbi Manian and Phil Malek bought me near , but I didn't see it until I went to the bridge and spotted it in the back shore of the Pool, out of sight from the viewing platform. It was an adult bird with specks of rustiness on its back. Peter took a picture. This is the second time this species was seen here since a week ago report by Keir. So,it a reliable location to see Lily Pool ( near the Binnen bridge or boathouse) best for Rusty Blackbirds.

Some other reports thru the day mentioned are WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on Lookout Hill's Butterfly meadow , sighted by Eni Falci and PINE SISKINS in the west Lullwater where both of us saw YELLOW BELLIED SAPSUCKER . However , a new spring species is TREE SWALLOW, which Eni mentioned to me a flyover over the Maryland Monument ( must be a sonar beacon ?) ; later Rob Jett with the birders mentioned above saw TREE SWALLOWS over Prospect Lake.
I saw a WINTER WREN on a brief passage thru the Vale of Cashmere, in the pool section under the Cedar of Lebanon conifer.
Over at Greenwood Cemetery, Rob Jett reported PINE WARBLER at Cemetery ridge. Back here, a RED BAT was spotted by Rob at Lily Pool. Hoping it didn't get the Rusty .....
Warm weather ( well, its going to break 50 later this week) coming , maybe more birds, likely Pine Warblers bringing their friends the Palms ?

Prospect March 26th Pine Warblers and winter species
Reports received this morning of PINE WARBLERS in a few locations:
--Boulder Bridge (T.Stephenson )
--Lullwater near the Boathouse ( also YELLOW RUMPED WARBLER) ( RBate)
--Maryland Monument , towards the Nethermead ( Chris Holden)
--North Pines below the Terrace Bridge ( Rob Jett, et al)
ON Lookout Hill Butterfly Meadow, WHITE WINGED CROSSBILLS.
Tom Stephenson led the NYC Audubon group and reported several good species for this date, among them some winter species as it been all winter, the Xbills ( see above) , Pine Siskins with incoming spring migrant RUSTY BLACKBIRD.
A single COMMON REDPOLL was seen in the water edge in the Vale of Cashmere pool; later it was spotted perched by the bench near the water fountain at the south end.

Today I led a group of birders for NYC Audubon. We had some good birds on a nice but brisk day.
Almost 50 species; not bad for this time of year. Highlights include 3 species of Merganser, White-winged Crossbill, Pine Siskin, Rusty Blackbird, Pine Warbler, Peregrine, Monk Parakeet, and American Tree sparrow.

Prospect March 25th Pine warbler and snowflakes ? It's nuts I say....
A very odd juxtaposition today with PINE WARBLER, the spring season's first true warbler , seen under falling snowflakes. This "mixup " of spring warbler & wintry scenery points to hopeful warm signs and spring's pending migration but will it come soon enough ? ( Phil the Puxtatawny Groundhog must be feeling the PRESS-ure for calling it wrong ....)
Peter Colen got the PINE WARBLER , first on the ground by the Terrace Bridge shipping container and took excellent photos of the bright bird. See his brief report with the photo gallery link. After Mr Colen's text alert, I swung by but failed to find the bird ( my favorite ).
In addition to his warbler find, the residing VARIED THRUSH cooperated nicely for Peter , he getting another excellent , terrific photo with the thrush extraordinaire at the usual location , Quaker south slope near the bridle trail.
A YELLOW BELLIED SAPSUCKER refuses to leave his favorite tree, the Cedar of Lebanon in the Vale Cashmere pool midsection; it must be great sap...
While spring is delayed, winter birds are in no hurry to leave. The lake is evidence of that , when I found within the Peninsula cove, 7 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERs ( 6 drakes and 7 this years tying the historical high for Prospect ) with one of the COMMON MERGANSER hens with the other hen on a snag at West Island, this Merg "snapping" at water snag companions; obviously in this crummy day ,the Common Merg is in a very bad mood . Also in that collective mix mainly RUDDY DUCKS was a drake SCAUP which after close examination turns out to be a GREATER SCAUP and this male bird hung out with two RING-NECKED DUCK hens. Talk about gender species confusion !It must be the snowflakes getting in their eyes.
And it seems that a juvenile RED-TAILED HAWK is a rambunctious type. 2 weekend s ago, we saw such an individual chase the ducks near the Lullwater Bridge, causing the ducks to dive quickly. This morning , I saw the same thing, only this time the RTHA swooped down upon unsuspecting feeding Canada Geese on the lawn ! This took place on the south lake shore opposite the Duck Island. It must be boring for the poor hawk in this stranglehold winter . Oh Spring , where thou art ?

hi Peter: I wasn't sure if I should send this or not but there was a flyover of three TVs when I was up on Lookout with a birder from Queens looking at the ww xbills. I saw single tv followed by a kettle of three more tvs. This would be about 1 pm. thanks, Monica

March 24th Prospect /GWC
The continuing VARIED THRUSH tops the news , with a report from Steve Nanz, the bird seen up the Quaker south slope, best seen from the bridle trail that goes into the edge of the woods. See the map link I posted in previous posts.
For the next best thing today , RUSTY BLACKBIRD ( Rafael, Monica) in the Vale of Cashmere and WHITE -WINGED CROSSBILLS on Butterfly Meadow are continuing opportunities.
Over in Greenwood Cemetery, AMERICAN WOODCOCK was reported from last Sunday by Orrin , the same bird from yesterday ( since unlikely one spot must be that magnetic!) , the second bird reported by Dennis , seen at the Heath Path from Sassafras Ave
Staying with GWCemetery, Rob Jett posted a tweet of COMMON RAVEN over the main entrance ( 25thst/5th Ave); if this species is still roaming Brooklyn skies, I wonder whether they are nesting ? RING-NECKED DUCKS on the Sylvan Waters spruces up the scene.

The Varied Thrush is still around PP, more or less the same general area it was reported yesterday. And again, I missed today by less than 5 minutes. But I was rewarded to see a small group of Pine Siskins feeding on the dry fruits of Sweet Gum Tree. I estimated ±4 individuals.
At the Butterfly meadow, Lookout Hill, I got the nice surprise to see 2 pairs of White-winged Crossbills very active feeding on the fruits of the Sweet Gum tree. Several times I saw the individuals getting into the ground, picking 1 fruit at the time, bringing to a low branch, and using her/his extraordinary bill, to extract the seeds. They were so tame, that I took some relative good pixls with my point-and-shot camara.
Lily pond gave me a nice view of a pair of Wood Ducks. At the pools, the Hooded Merganser & the Gadwall still around.
Early at the Vale of Cashmere, I found a single Rusty Blackbird (pictures taken). Yesterday I got 2 Common Redpolls in the same general area.
