Hot action at Lower Pool
elusive Virginia Rail of Lower pool, after my work shift ended at 4, I kept my fingers crossed. Instead -- as always you wind up with something else just as good.
After some patient waiting at the lower pool west fence, a birder mentioned where the Summer Tanager was. With the rail a noshow, why not? Go get the tanager. Its a beautiful --I heard -- adult gorgeous red bird. So around the upper pool I go and arriving back of the upper pool I bumped into Hooded warbler domain. A helpful birder with his kid in a stroller, called The Hooded out. It proceeded to cross the path to the slope side where great looks succeeded. But enough! I gotta get the tanager!
And sure enough with help from a birder and Caleb, the bright red Summer Tanager shone from a large Linden tree inside the high fence woods just south of the Esdale bridge. I of course tweeted on WhatApp.
I ran into Ed on his bike in the Nethermead. He was pursuing the tanager as well. He succeeded finding it and provided significant details in case others chase it.Apparently Ed observed the tanager entering a big knot in a London Plane tree that harbored bees.( or wasps). The tanager was beesy as a bee , smacking on his snacks.
The Virginia rail I gathered later was reported today along the lower pool west shore but hard to see or hiding out somewhere out of sight. Its too noisy.
Next time.

Heads up for Friday the 26th?
A bang bang bird
On my way back to finish my work shift at 4, I happened to pass a crowd on the Falkill falls path.Thinking they were looking at a reported Summer Tanager, instead when I asked my friend Joe, hes says " Hooded Warbler",of course I'm going to stop.
What followed was a show by this warbler. Flirting through a large downed oak tree, the gorgeous male Hooded Warbler is an extroverted one, providing close stunning looks- definitely a crowd pleaser. I heard about this bird late morning from Ed Crowne and I was glad to find it --a bang bang bird in that I jammed right into the crowd and get my bird immediately.
In other reports beside the previous Lower pool Virginia Rail, a Summer Tanager also at Fallkill Falls, was seen at the edge of Upper Pool. A second summer tanager appeared at Greenwood Cemetery Dellwater this afternoon.

A short stroll is a golden oppportunity
Sunday afternoon I decided to go for a short stroll in Prospect and I succeeded with a golden bird.
I have to confess: I can't get enough of a Prothonotary Warbler. With the one at West Island-- still residing there for several days now --it was too tempting not to go see it. It didn't take me long. Someone pointed it out and I was awarded really excellent looks as the bird foraged on the islands south tip tree; eventually it worked its way along the west shoreline offering great contrast for watching birders and photographers. Sometimes it came toward us for mainland shrubbery and then back. Just a wowza bird.
After an hour I continued on for Three Sisters islands. On the Hammerhead ,I picked up seeing my first seasonal Yellow rumped warbler and a Green heron flying across the lake to land in 3 Sisters.
At one point I took a breather and sat on a bench. And here I was an audience for a probing Pine Warbler ,my favorite, as it moved within an old Mulberry Tree. What a treat!
Sometimes going slow with ease and disregard for big number days is the way to go.
Happy Earth Day.🌎

I don't know marla. There are so many new birders that I don't recognize most of the names. Too fast and competitive nowadays

Then I looked at the posts again Marla L.from Prospect Heights identified this bird as a yellow bellied sapsucker. I think she got it. The bird is so yellow, and the migratory timing makes sense. So you were close. With no red on the head, I didn't think juvenile. Young birds are often tough to figure out.
