My last walk of the year 2014 around the park. A very cold walk (±32°F), and no much different.  Most of the activity I saw was around the feeders of Breezy Hill. At the ballfields, a large flock of Canada Geese was forraging.  I did not count them but estimated over a 100 indvs.

Christmas Greetings

The Kingsboider wishes all a Merry Christmas and the happiest of holidays. A great year full of momentous nature and birds with the promises of the New Year to come. Thanks for reading this blog and continuing to be part of the great Brooklyn birding community .

Luke 2:8-20

8 And in that region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear.
10 And the angel said to them, "Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people;
11 for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger."
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
14 "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!"
15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us."
16 And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
17 And when they saw it they made known the saying which had been told them concerning this child;
18 and all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.
19 But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart.
20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

Rainy Christmas Eve

A very soggy day ( which would have been a rare White Christmas if 25 degrees colder) with little birding to do. However the birds of the feeders do not mind, they are active as ever. Its a feast and among the Chickadees, Titmice, Mourning Doves, House Finches, Cardinals, a very energetic RED BREASTED NUTHATCH spared no time grabbing all the seed.

It must be a Holiday INN !

Don't know if Ridgewood  Reservoir got included in the  weekend count ....anyway it was drizzling and dark this afternoon, of the 15 birds on the water I was able to determine at least 8 of them were red head ducks, one am coot, and they were newly joined by at least one ring neck duck. Bird Holidays cheer

On a gloomy overcast day, three good species that warm the holiday heart.

First , I scanned the lake as count period still is in effect till tomorrow, and found the Prospect CBC COMMON MERGANSERS threesome of 2 drakes, 1 hen still present on the Lake. First seen near the Peninsula thumb, they moved closer to Three Sisters Islands when I went over to the south Lake shore. While I was at the "Hammerhead Peninsula" the southwest corner of the lake with the two small coves by West Island, a finch flock flew in over my head.They landed in the mature Ash tree, moved around abit whereas the flock perched long enough for me to discern against the contrasting sky PINE SISKINS, 22 birds I hastily counted before they flew off towards West Island. Check your Sweet gum trees ( or even Ash)  spots in Prospect as you may see the roving flock.

And just after noon on my lunch hour, I ran into Russ Alderson at the Maryland Monument. He has the very cooperative CLAY COLORED SPARROW on the slope lawn. I didn't see the rare sparrow while I was conversing with Russ but when we departed, I found the sparrow along the road going towards the Nethermead. It was about 100 feet east past the information Kiosk down  by that lawn triangle; Or at the east point of that triangle. The CLAY COLORED SPARROW was with some CHIPPING  and WHITE THROATED SPARROWS. So this bird is expanding its perimeter not counting its traveling to the Quaker Cemetery or the Peninsula Meadow if you don't see it at the Maryland.

Russ Alderson's report

Nice to see you today. Glad you refound the clay fella.

It's the new season:but sometimes thrilling and definitely chillin'.

Bobbi Manian reported a potential fly in Glaucous Gull that perched momentarily on Bush Terminal Pier Park distant pier before taking off towards Owls Head Park,likely the sewage filtration plant.

Peter: Here is.

So…2014 was way better than 2013, but still sort of a mixed bag.

I’ve include our worst misses, in case you want to alert readers of species that still might make ‘count week.’

Thanks to everyone for helping organize the chaos so I could get this together quickly, & now I hope I can get all the area-captain data together (I’ll start assembling what I have later today).

Best to all & Happy Hol’s,
Rick
