Sitting on the bench by Prospect lake western shore, I obviously see the return of the Ruddy Duck. Their numbers over twenty birds in the setting Sun glow matches the northern shovelers flock.
Spread out and in some areas clustered, the Ruddy Duck have totally lost their renown complexion. The same can't be said for the shovelers which are in breeding plumage as the drakes will court the hens over the winter spell. Off to the south are a pair of Wood ducks, the Drake obviously better more outstanding plumaged birds. The bland Mallards are in outlying places. A pair of Double crested Cormorants and a sizable number of Canada Geese fill out the rest of the waterfowl population.
Whether you are ready or not, winter is coming, with icons represented by the duck.
