- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S402004720
- Comments: "Flagged for date: starting to get a little late, and now vastly outnumbered by phoebes, though they’ve only been flagged for a few days I think. This one briefly perched above the new wildflower  meadow near the dog beach, and I was a little surprised to see it was a pewee: a clear crest, just a little bit of eyering (more than on phoebes), more upright posture, generally more slender, and with a distinct vest (though not the darker sides of an OSFL) and color on the bill. I saw it long enough to at least start looking for any sign of Western Wood-pewee, because I do have those brainworms this time of year, and saw none. (There really was a lot of color in the bill, and the vest didn’t seem especially dark.) It then disappeared when I raised my camera."

Hi Peter,
Nice running into you today at the park.  As promised, I’ve attached a photo of the red-shouldered Hawk I saw today in the park.

Chris and I also had a broad-winged Hawk, but those photos didn’t come out well.

Best,
Marleny Rafferty

Disappeared deeper into the trees as soon as I worked out what it was, and did not reappear, though I staked out the area for some time. I was lucky enough to record it chipping loudly, as Merlin was running at the time, so I have audio of the bird. In clip, the chip can be heard at 2:17.

Hi Peter,

Another good Tuesday walk with a great group of people; the species diversity has dropped a little since last week, with 56 in total, but it was enjoyable seeing all the newly-arrived kinglets, White-throated Sparrows, and Ruddy Ducks since last week. We still saw 11 species of warblers, plus a Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Lincoln's Sparrow, and growing numbers of Blue Jays. They appear to be on the move now.

We have two more weeks in the season. Hopefully we'll get to see some hawk migration next week.

Ryan

Red headed woodpecker today at BTPP

Red-headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus) (1)
- Reported Oct 06, 2026 07:25 by Nick Dawson
- Bush Terminal Piers Park, Kings, New York
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=40.6541609,-74.0204451&ll=40.6541609,-74.0204451
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S399832176
- Comments: "Juvenile in undulating flight over the park. Grey head, dark wings with those unmistakable white wing patches. Tried to land halfway up a (metal!) light pole, failed immediately and then headed on eastward. Interestingly, the light pole — standing alone in an otherwise open area — would have been perfect for the bird, except that it wasn’t actually a tree. I wonder if such confused behavior from juveniles has been documented elsewhere. Sadly was not quick enough to get photos."
