Nighthawks and north wind

Obviously spurred on by an afternoon originated northwest wind, 3 COMMON NIGHTHAWKs appeared.

Reported by Karen O'Hearn, the species was seen over the Nethermead as dusk descended. It should carry over tomorrow but there's going to be good bird migration on Thursday.

Eclipse Hawk

During yesterday's eclipse watch, my coworkers all went up to the Grand Army Plaza Arch roof. During that time, a RED TAILED HAWK flew in perched on the statue of Victory.

My question :Did anybody tell that hawk to wear solar glasses ???

Today starting at 1:20 pm is the PARTIAL Eclipse of our sun here in NYC. The halfway mark or peak is 2:44 PM ,eclipse phase ending 4 pm

About 70 % of our sun will be covered.Despite this coverage ,its still dangerous to look at the sun !  Be safe and use Certified Solar glasses  see link

I saw a bunch of American Redstarts in 3 different locations and one sizable group of Yellow Warblers.  A lonely Northern Waterthrush appeared at Dell Water also.

Prospect morn birds

Thanks much to Anne Murray who I ran into at Butterfly meadow,I was able to Garner 4 species warblers.

Including several birds between Ravine Rocky Pass and Peninsula south shore,we watched a few BLACK WHITE, YELLOW & AMERICAN REDSTARTS.Two NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES also appeared.Though not rare,it's a nice start to fall birding on a warm southerly wind day.

We also spotted an immature BLACK CROWNED NIGHT HERON HERON in Lullwater cove and GREAT BLUE HERON flying to Duck Island. Wood ducks at Lullwater cove and Upper pool plus a perched juvenile TEDTAILED HAWK at North Nethermead fills in a lazy like summer morning.

These days it's great to have those extra sharp eyes.

Prospect Park yesterday evening, August 19 around 6:30pm.

(I also saw three night heron, at first I thought they were juvenile

Safe methods for viewing solar eclipse

NYC will have a PARTIAL Eclipse. Two safe ways not directly looking at sun with your back towards sun:

A pinhole camera with cardboard with a center pen point size puncture and a dark stiff paper / cardboard behind the pinhole.

Or

Take your binoculars and invert with cardboard shield over  one lens (front) onto a dark or light  stiff paper or cardboard. Shield acts as a light block.But first cutout a stiff cardboard that fits over the front lens of the binoculars.your shield.
