- Comments: "*Rare - 4th record in Brooklyn, and first for the cemetery. Originally found by Enrico L on Saturday; refound today by Rob J and Gordon L, and for the sake of completeness - re-re-found by Josh, who got me and a few others on it, after not being seen for a few hours. Adult non-breeding male. Bright yellow bird with black wings, wingbars - one bright yellow, the other whiter. Orange bill and a bit of orange in the face around the bill.

The bird was in the general vicinity of Cyprus and Vine, but took long flights, and was covering a wide area.  That said, it kept returning to Yew bushes, and was eating the berries, so they would be a good place to look."

- Comments: "Bright yellow bird with black wings larger than finches landed on spruce next to Crescent water in good light. About 20-25 meters from me. Excellent view for about 10-15 seconds allowed to discern white bar on black wings and clear smudge of dark red/orange around black, stubby bill. It then took off to the NE of the lake and I could not find it anymore. Hardly believing my eyes, I went through all possible alternatives - Scarlet and Summer Tanagers, both lacking white wing bar and red/orange smudge; Baltimore Oriole, wrong bill, size and color; Orchard Oriole, wrong bill, much duller yellow and lack of red/orange smudge - and confirmed ID. Fantastic!"

Prospect feeders Friday the 13th

Nothing unlucky at all today with a look at two gorgeous looking PURPLE FINCHES content at the feeders I just filled. Glad to get the opportunity to watch these beautiful birds

Also of note before feeders refill,two COMMON GRACKLES on one empty feeder..their heaviness swayed the feeder.

Thursday feeders

 On this dreary looking day, watching the feeders can be uplifting. And seeing a bird known for its cheery song can be an antidote for the day's grayness.

Just as my lunch hour was ending i visited the feeders. With usual aplomb, birds actively devoured the seeds. Titmice, Chickadees, cardinals and two Red winged Blackbirds were easily outnumbered by the American Goldfinch. However it was an unexpected bird that descended on the suet that pleased me, a Carolina Wren. With it rich brown red plumage accentuated by its bold supercilium, Carolina Wrens in the open are such beauties.

For your information, the feeders are refilled Mondays and Fridays. Otherwise, i plan around it if i'm off those days.

A  big shout out to Karen O'Hearn who donated a very generous contribution of $100 for new seed.This should help me me thru the early winter at least unless the American Goldfinch say otherwise with their super appetites; Thanks to Karen !

Feeders today

 Activity at Prospect's feeders continue to hum with winter finches.

On two visits today the second more productive , 3 PURPLE FINCHES and 4 PINE SISKINS acomodated regulars. On the platform feeder I witnessed a crowd of 12 American Goldfinches with a few Siskins.

Many Thanks today to birders Xandra and Tripper Paul for donating $20 each. Tonight I ordered 30 lbs of thistle which goes fast with the super hungry Goldfinches.  🐦🍴

Prospect bird feeders

In light of this falls winter Finch irruption, the bird feeder season has begun! Usually the feeders go up Thanksgiving week.

If you need to know the location ask around or email us at the Brooklyn bird club contact page.

One more very important thing: please practice COVID protocols. Masks,social distancing etc. The fence line was redesigned  to try to accommodate people. And please do not enter the area.if something is amiss, contact me or the BBC page.

Linda Ewing reported.seeing the juvenile Common Gallinule out on open water near Music Island as she observed from the War Memorial ( rink)

On the Hammerhead of southwest Lake, Purple Finches. Offshore from the same spot 6 Hooded Mergansers says Linda.

Over at Greenwood cemetery Rob Jeff spotted ten low flyover EVENING GROSBEAKS at the high point "hawk watch" Kiamie Crypt.
