IN an otherwise subpar winter year for Prospect feeders, even the sight of 26 RED WINGED BLACKBIRDS and 7 NORTHERN CARDINAL  rouses attention.

With no rarities so far , in what is an off year , enjoyment of the feeder birds comes in the realm of little moments, like seeing a large flock of blackbirds that even Ebird questioned me for the number reported. ( Believe me , Ebird, I KNOW BLACKBIRDS)

Having all those cardinals, a RED BELLIED WOODPECKER,  and a WHITE BREASTED NUTHATCH adds "suspense".

I'm waiting for the Groundhog to tell me 6 more weeks of winter is forthcoming...I got plenty of seed left.

Open for business lake

Most of Prospect Lake opened Sunday thanks to the warm melt and that attracts duck business.

As multiple 140 plus NORTHERN SHOVELERS scattered about on Prospect Lake, I spotted a drake RED BREASTED MERGANSER in the middle, an uncommon species here in Prospect.Though a common winter offshore species, this merganser is quite welcomed here at the Lake. That's the wonder of a lake that's not completely frozen:it brings in the ducks.

Watchful eyes

Upon entering the spot where the Prospect feeders are viewed,nary a bird was seen.Why? Hmm. If a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK watches from above,it would be a good reason.

Elyse Taylor alerted us to the adult hawk. A Northern Cardinal scolded the ignorant hawk and a variety of House Finches fluttered about the adult Sharpie but their noise didn't make it budge.

On my way to the feeders I ran into Steve and Heidi Nanz at Well Drive . While in discussion with them,Heidi spotted an EUROPEAN GOLDFINCH. It was a first for Steve and he wound up photographing several of the species adjacent to the shipping containers.

The lake is still melting but I was able to pick out a hen BUFFLEHEAD within the RUDDY DUCK flock. The Nanz s told me they saw the Drake WOOD DUCK
 Other than 60+ NORTHERN SHOVELERS and a small contingent of ordinary gulls,it's quiet there at the lake.

The open water spot on the western shoreline of Prospect Lake has widened abit and this is all right for ducks.

Last night when I passed by , I counted 83 NORTHERN SHOVELERS and 14 American coots.Today I see the drake WOOD DUCK happily doing its wading routine.A number of gulls were on the ice nearby but being busy today working I had no time to check them out as usual.

Mega gull at Prospect Lake

Master birder Sean Sime pulled out a really good gull ,a mega find for Prospect this early afternoon with MEW/COMMON GULL.

Initially identified as Common the European subspecies it's now believed by Sean to be the northwestern North American subspecies.

The Mew Gull hung out in the mostly Ringbilleds gull flock ~200 ft from the western shoreline of Prospect Lake. It stayed there for about an hour affording excellent looks for the small flash mob . This species is very likely Prospects first record.

To distinguish the Mew from likewise Ringbilleds,look at the thinner darker pale yellow bill with no ring band. Also there's a characteristic white tertial patch on its back..

The gull flew out about 220.
