guest PP Bald eagle origin

Birder Gigi A posted to Facebook group NY Birders a certificate of the eagle's --Rover-- origin based on its federal leg band.

It's a near three year old bird banded May 11th 2018 and its nest born in was in Connecticut ( no specific location). The bander though works out of Milford CT..

A fantastic winter collection for the short spell this mid-afternoon for me. With help from passing acquaintances : Rob B indicating 2nd Common Merganser; Carl B pointing out the Red Throated Loon off Peninsula Thumb; and Tripper P letting me know the Black headed Gull arrived,all the whole time i gabbed with Lenny G.

A Ring necked Duck ,Hooded mergansers and Wood Ducks are appreciated.

I have to say that Prospect Lake is at its "finest hour"  . The late winter season for its quality rarities is likely one of the best years. ( If u count the Mew gull, Iceland Gull, Lesser black backed gull and Rover the eagle).

Winter ain't over yet!

■ Mars is about 3° left of the Pleiades this evening through Saturday evening. Its background stars slide down a little farther to the lower right each day, as seen below.

In contrast to Glaucous, this bird was smaller, and particularly smaller-headed, without the massive linebacker vibe of Glaucous and Greater-Black. Bird slightly smaller than adjacent Herring Gulls, with a significantly slimmer-than-Herring all black bill and overall sandy/creamy plumage (white marked sandy or very pale brown). Pink legs and feet."

It seems my luck finally materialized with the raindrops.Because after four attempts I finally caught up with the Black headed Gull and an ice stationed Mew Gull.

With a plastic bag over my scope I arrived happy to see the west shore rustic shelter unoccupied .Nobody else was around...too bad. From here after ten minutes scouring the smaller than usual gull flock I spotted the Black headed gull. In among the Ringbilleds but not blocked I had terrific views in my 30 year old-- at least-- Kowa scope.

About ten minutes more I blessed my luck as I have now in open view left of the flock the immature Mew Gull. The light was good despite light raindrops and carefully checking off the diagnostic field marks, I can boast my personal find seen on the ice the Mew ( being the last time was a swimming bird).

I scanned the flock several times more hoping to get greedy with a third rare gull but instead I picked up the Mergansers.

The latter sighting with the Mergansers was a nice event. The drake Hooded flirted closely with the much larger Common hen. But methinks Hoodie she's not the right gal for you.

Wood Ducks are considered winter rare, so that species added bonus to my hour birding list. Winter birding --not everyone's cup of tea --is at times very rewarding.
