- Comments: "Fairly rare—only my second ever in the park, at least when it comes to one I feel comfortable enough identifying and listing, and my first this year—and sometimes a difficult ID, though this bird immediately stood out as not only being very short-necked and small-bodied (even among a flock of already small Canada Geese) and having a steep forehead, but for its tiny, stubby bill, which was almost invisible at a distance until I raised my binoculars. Still, because this can be a tough ID, I quickly texted photos to other trusted birders and took to the Discord asking for second opinions, and everyone agreed that it was a Cackler. Unfortunately, less than a half hour after I first saw the bird and started to get out word, it took off with its whole flock, headed SW. A few of us combed the lake for about an hour after that, but no other geese that even seemed to be promising Cackling candidates remained on the lake. Photos."

Saturdays summary of local rarities

For brevity and less posts here is what I read from multiple Ebird reports today:

Dominating the rare birds, the juvenile Glaucous Gull continues its cooperation at Brooklyn Army Pier 4 (BATPier 4 ) ,in close views on the pier for birders sometimes.

Going east abit,stopping at Greenwood Cemetery, the Red Headed Woodpecker showing some color stays true caching its favorite tree just west of Hemlock and Battle aves intersection.

At Pastoral Dell, a late  continuing Eastern Phoebe hangs about.

Walk abit more east to Prospect, you'll find a uncommon goose and the warbler parade. A Cackling Goose was observed on the lake. Then the remarkable parade of warblers makes Prospect a go-to place: 3 Orange-crowned ,two at Breeze Hill hairpin path by music island and one hanging out with the Nashville on the Hammerhead, feeding on sapwells at the center by the shore; a Wilson's in the vicinity of the Lincoln statue south of concert Grove ,with a nearby large Holly tree at Breeze its abode as well; and last is the Pine Warbler visiting the feeders.

A frigid day tomorrow and Monday, hopefully the birds survive.

- Comments: "Fortuitously the first bird I saw as I arrived. Flying overhead, immediately noticeable due to its large size, uniform tan and cream color, and pink bill with a clean black tip. After quickly losing it, I picked it up again circling the pier where it eventually landed."

- Comments: "*Continuing bird now sitting on sand-filled barge in the middle of the bay. Very large pale gull with white wingtips. Dusky enough individual that it was difficult to pick out at this distance when the wingtips were not visible. Distant photos"

- Comments: "Continuing, originally found earlier in the day by Josh Malbin. Dark first-cycle bird with scaly, light brownish gray upperparts and gray-white-flecked body and head. Beady little eye, pink legs, and bulky pink bill with a black tip. Primaries subtly patterned but light overall when compared to reference images of Nelson’s Gull. Overall, a hefty gull — far larger than nearby RBGU — but its scale was most apparent once it took to the water. Chris and I observed it briefly on the pier amid the Rock Pigeons before it flew east toward the Army Terminal and landed in the cove south of the pier. Photos."
