The National Park Service (NPS) recently kicked off a Stewardship Plan for the East and West Pond area of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge at Gateway National Recreation Area. Through this planning effort, NPS will work with the community to develop strategies for resource protection, education and interpretation, and visitor experience at this beloved natural area. NPS is currently seeking input from visitors and stakeholders on issues to be addressed or evaluated in this plan. Interested members of the public are invited to attend the virtual open house on May 17 at 7:00 pm.

Participants are encouraged to submit questions in advance of the event by emailing Gateway_Feedback@nps.gov. Public comments on the plan will be accepted through June 7. More info is available at the registration site for the May 17 meeting.

Rain at the right time

We disdain rain when its peak migration, but when it hits at the right time, it can be spectacular birding.

Any spring rain storm overnight during early morning hours puts a stop on bird migration. Birds come down and wait for the storm to pass, That means birders get the best chances for numbers and oddities.

A  case in point was a rare weekday birding walk by the Brooklyn Bird Club. Today it was a rare trip to a small island called Governors Island. Expectations weren't high and the inclement weather look like a downer. But lo and behold, I get a report from trip leader Ryan Goldberg--leading 25 birders-- saying he and his group found 71 species birds, including a Eastern Whip-poor-will!. Adding to that,  good sparrow variety included White-crowned and Seaside Sparrow with numbers of the more common species. For an island, 71 species is darn good.

In Prospect, 93 species in the morning with good warbler variety..some birders at dawn said it was a fallout , a term I don't use lightly unless the numbers are mind blowing. Nevertheless, the birding was good according to several sources pointing to the Ravine among the best locations.

I'll post more later including Ryans' list , photos and a summation of the day ..

We are still looking for teams for the 2022 Brooklyn Bird Club Birdathon, to be held in celebration of World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) on Saturday, May 14.

The annual Birdathon asks birders to form teams of up to 6 members and count bird species in Brooklyn in support of a cause that helps the birds we love. Everyone is welcome ─ hardcore birders, backyard feeder watchers, and beginners! Like a walkathon, participants collect pledges and donations from friends and family for finding and counting bird species on the day of the Birdathon. Instead of getting a pledge per mile walked, Birdathon participants ask for a pledge for each bird species seen by the team.

This year's designated beneficiary of our annual Birdathon is the Green-wood Cemetery. We will be raising funds for the planting of a bird-friendly native meadow along Magnolia Ave adjacent to Valley Water. This stretch of native grasses will reflect the character of those on the hillside behind the chapel, which has become a productive habitat for migrants.

We're also excited to introduce our new online donation platform, Givebutter, for the 2022 Birdathon! https://givebutter.com/brooklyn-bird-club-2022-spring-birdathon. Thursday 2nd Wave

The birds wasted no time after Tuesday's wave. Thursday was a good one. With hi lights and good birds both in Prospect and Greenwood Cemetery, good diversity reigned.

Prospect had 113 species, of which 23 warbler species were observed. Top birds were Hooded warbler, Cape May,Wormeating,Tennessee,Wilsons,and Bay breasted. The Hooded is along the path woods between Lower pool and Esdale Bridge with reports it visited the waterfall.

Also on the Prospect list are good sparrows. Lincoln,White crowned and Field come to mind.

A Solitary sandpiper and Rusty Black bird were water species also around.

Meanwhile over in the cemetery, the Prothonotary Warbler as well as a Hooded were Dellwater visitors.A report I posted from "MICH" showed her/his seeing 21 warbler species so Greenwood was great as well. A quick look at the GWC checklist shows 99 species.

Today's walk began with about 25 participants. The weather was fine and the birds and birders finer.

We observed 81 species of birds overall, including 20 species of warblers. Highlights included male Indigo Bunting, a pair of Worm-eating Warblers in the Midwood, a male Scarlet Tanager, male Blackburnian Warbler in close proximity, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, a pair of Hooded Warblers, Spotted Sandpiper, and a Bay-breasted Warbler (unfortunately seen by one observer only). Birding briefs rare warblers

The Kentucky warbler continues at Brooklyn bridge park near the pirate ship at BBP north end,the bird moving up the rise.

Mourning warbler stayed put as well, at Greenwood cemetery Dellwater ,seen displaying on a stump at the northwest area.

After clouds passed this afternoon, the butterfly meadow had a small assortment of warblers in the north oaks next to the pine grove according to a source.

Nashvile, Northern and Louisiana water thrushe's were some Warblers reported in prospect

In the first big day of this spring birding, today was a day to be out. Lucky birders especially in prospect boasted among their sightings great diversity and 111 species to boot. And you know all green patches had birds.

Prospect birders collectively found 23 warbler species. Among them high quality species included Hooded,Blue-winged,Tennessee,Worm-eating,Nashville and Prairie.

With non warblers, add good sparrows and shorebirds. Field,Lincoln and White crowned Sparrows, the latter at Well house top this genera. A Solitary Sandpaper visited the Lower Pool mudflat.

And theres more: A Forster tern; Purple Finch,Rusty Black bird ; and a bunch of thrushes on Lookout Hill including Gray-cheeked.

Meanwhile over in Greenwood Cemetery's Dellwater, a few good ones as well. Of those sightings,Mourning Warbler is the best,followed by Summer Tanager and Lincoln Sparrow.

A Kentucky Warbler continues to be a showing at Brooklyn Bridge Park near the "pirate ship" ( in a playground).

Hi Peter,

Well, today was the day we've been waiting for!  Birds everywhere.   80 species including 19 warblers.  We had about 15 birders and birded a good 7 hours.  highlights were the very cooperative Hooded still in the ravine, as well and good looks at Blue-wings, Nashville and Tennessee.  At one point 3 male RB Grossbeaks on the 'bridge with no name' by the music pagoda.    if they dont blow out tonight, there's a good chance they will all still be around for Thursday's walk.

Good prospects for the next two days,especially Wednesday.

Two good warblers in the nabe.

Informed of them, two prized warblers are reported in the nabe.

A KENTUCKY WARBLER today was found in Brooklyn Bridge Park very near the Manhattan Bridge.

And switching over to Prospect Park, HOODED WARBLER appeared in the Ravine section , looking like along the path opposite the back shore of Lower Pool towards Esdale bridge.
