Members of WILD for Prospect Park will be venturing out to do a Lakeside cleanup and visitor outreach on Saturday, November 24th from 12:30pm-2:30pm.
We will scan the banks of the lakeside for debris that can threaten the park's wildlife (and visitors) as well as reach out to folks on how they can become better stewards of the park and it's wildlife.

Prospect & Greenwood Cemetery 11/18
Good movement of Crossbills in both locations, REDS in Greenwood,WHITE- WINGEDS in Prospect with the former carrying greater numbers.
In the same reliable Greenwood spot that has seen White winged Xbills in past weeks, today it was the cousin species, 30 RED CROSSBILLS seen feeding in a pine cone abundant large spruce along the Heath Path from Cypress Ave in the southwest section of Greenwood. After 20 minutes in the same tree, the flock flew to other surrounding large spruces.
In the same reliable Greenwood spot that has seen White winged Xbills in past weeks, today it was the cousin species, 30 RED CROSSBILLS seen feeding in a pine cone abundant large spruce along the Heath Path from Cypress Ave in the southwest section of Greenwood. After 20 minutes in the same tree, the flock flew to other surrounding large spruces.
To get here on weekends, it is best to enter the weekend only Fort Hamilton Ave entrance opposite Burger King, go straight 3 "plot sections" to Cypress Ave, turn left and go about 3 or 4 plot sections to the Heath Path( just before Dale Avenue )with the spruces to the right and up above the Hazel path as well. Further west there is another large Spruce, I believe near Border Avenue. Pick up a free large map at the security booth at the entrance. Otherwise, only the 25th /5th Avenue entrance is open on weekdays and a map is essential for the approximate 45 minute walk to this southwest section of conifers.
A further note : Keir , who was fortunate to see the Reds, recorded their songs and inquired Matt Young of Cornell , who identified the species as TYPE 3 ( there are 5 different sub-species listed on ebird checklist)

Going back to Greenwood Cemetery, earlier , before the Crossbill extravaganza, a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was discovered on the dirt berm excavated from the new Mausoleum near Crescent Water.
And last, 8 Brooklyn Bird Club members volunteers helped cleaned the storm debris filled paths along the south side of Prospect Lake, coordinated by Rob Bate; so as my rare bird alerts were going out, they stayed true to their task, nerves of steel their noble attribute. Many thanks to Rob, Tracy Meade,Stanley Greenberg, Dennis Hrehowsik, Mike Yuan, Bob O 'neill, Ed Crowne and Janet Schumacher. A hat tip from the BBC.

Prospect Park was a box full of surprises. Everything started with some tex-mess early aboutWW Crossbill, and the EVGR seen around the feeders of Breezy Hill.
I started in the Vale, but nothing rare around here. By the time I get to Rick's Place, with some hope to see theWWCR, was starting to vanish, but...
First at the spot, I noticed a good number of White-throated Sparrows around the little pool of water, followed by Goldfinches, and Pine Siskins, and at least 3-4 Fox Sparrows. But a bird up in the trees, called my attention, a quick look, and here is a White-winged Crossbill, female. I lost track of her, but suddenly, a male & female landed near the water, followed by another female, and seconds later, a 2nd male!!! Four WWCRs, and all of them in the ground. Great.
By the time I arrived to Breezy Hill where the feeders are place, the EVGR was seen but already gone. I spent a good amount of time there, but no Grosbeak. But good numbers of PISIs, House & Purple Finches, White-throated & Fox Sparrows, both sps of Nuthatches. I went around the Peninsula, and the best, was 2 Buffleheads.
I came back to the feeders, and this time, with a little help of modern devices, the Evening Grosbeak, showed up, perched on top a high tree, flew across the driveway. A little later other birders, had the experience to see her landing on the feeders, and gave us the best of her.

Prospect Nov 17th; the spectacular fall continues
When I had a discussion in late October with Rob Bate about putting up the feeders up earlier than the usual Thanksgiving Day setup, it was because of the then current signs of a big winter finch irruption that started with PINE SISKINs. Fast forward to today , with reports in the region of heavy Crossbill irruption throughout the northeast, especially a report I read in Rhode Island of hundreds Red Crossbills and smaller numbers in Hecksers State Park on Long Island, it made sense for early feeder setup for hopes of getting at least one great and rare species at the feeders. That occurred today, a female EVENING GROSBEAK , in its second day at Prospect after Alex Wilson's sighting yesterday, commanding great views for the small contingent of birders who saw it today.
Yesterday's EVENING GROSBEAK (EVGR) was seen perched in a treetop by the Binnen bridge , viewed by Alex. This was the first time this very rare species was seen in Prospect since September 24th , 2000, a 12 year hiatus.Today's EVGR sighting was texted to me 12:59 by Isabel, alerted by a young birder named Noam. After arrival by a number of birders who missed out with this bird, our patience paid off, as the EVGR was spotted on the broken cherry limb behind and above the pole's umbrella shield ( baffle). Thereby, it warily came down to the upper right mesh feeder, rewarding birders and the feeders best bird for winter 2012-2013 ( so far unless we get Xbills).
Among the EVGR accompaniment, 7 PINE SISKINS in gorgeous views busily ate away the thistle seeds on the tube feeders close to the fence. many could see the yellowy wing feathers on a few of the siskins. FOX SPARROW atop the umbrella , looking down at a pair of PURPLE FINCHES and its showtime.
Good luck to you birdrs with the EVGR ; here's hoping the bird sticks around Sunday and beynd maybe bring more of its flock..

A female EVENING GROSBEAK was a first for me in Prospect today, seen
briefly perched above the Binnen Bridge. There did not appear to be
much diurnal movement going on, but other birds included EASTERN

Yesterday's EVENING GROSBEAK (EVGR) was seen perched in a treetop by the Binnen bridge , viewed by Alex. This was the first time this very rare species was seen in Prospect since September 24th , 2000, a 12 year hiatus.Today's EVGR sighting was texted to me 12:59 by Isabel, alerted by a young birder named Noam. After arrival by a number of birders who missed out with this bird, our patience paid off, as the EVGR was spotted on the broken cherry limb behind and above the pole's umbrella shield ( baffle). Thereby, it warily came down to the upper right mesh feeder, rewarding birders and the feeders best bird for winter 2012-2013 ( so far unless we get Xbills).
Among the EVGR accompaniment, 7 PINE SISKINS in gorgeous views busily ate away the thistle seeds on the tube feeders close to the fence. many could see the yellowy wing feathers on a few of the siskins. FOX SPARROW atop the umbrella , looking down at a pair of PURPLE FINCHES and its showtime.
Good luck to you birdrs with the EVGR ; here's hoping the bird sticks around Sunday and beynd maybe bring more of its flock..

much diurnal movement going on, but other birds included EASTERN

Prospect Nov 14th Finchy and blue
EASTERN BLUEBIRD and PINE SISKIN continue their impressive display here in Prospect, in field and feeders with the latter species in two locations. The feeder continues being a finch festival , with some bad bird behavior in action..
A flock of 14 EASTERN BLUEBIRD ( EABL) was reported seen by Rob Jett at the Tennis House, along the lawn when I finally saw 2. During work progress chipping storm damaged wood, a female EABL was spotted on the ground after tree limbs were dragged towards the chipper; then later the bird landed on the edge of the Pagoda stage, the bluebird actually landing on the stage front wall; an interesting approach there, perhaps a stage fright insect became a meal.
PINE SISKINs are no doubt a vibrant presence in Prospect now, 9 birds I saw feeding in the sweetgums overlooking the Lily Pool. At the feeders where finches control the action, 5 SISKINS were on one of the thistle tube feeders, combating with AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES. At one point , with a siskin already on a perch, when a goldfinch landed on the same perch, the siskin pecked at it. Bad bird behavior seems the norm, something birders should watch and enjoy while watching the feeders. But the siskins are outnumbered, with American Goldfinches showing might with their numbers. But the 4 PURPLE FINCHES paid no mind to the those other finches, continually to feed on and MTOB. As snows comes eventually, it will be mayhem: Good, let it come !

Regional Parks Hurricane websites alert; Prospect report 11/12
The impact from Hurricane Sandy upon our regional parks and preserves has gotten many birders wondering whats open and whats closed. We know for a fact all Gateway National Seashore parks are closed, some due to severe damage ( such as Fort Tilden, Breezy Point) or some like Floyd Bennett or Riis Park which has been commandeered by the federal emergency agencies ( like FEMA and the military) for salvage and dumping operations.The same also applies for NYC parks due mostly to damage trees and natural litter. Prospect 11/12
Today all is quiet, my feeling the warm weather has put a damper on any winter bird movement. And evidence that it was warm , a GREAT EGRET makes the highlight ! Seen knee deep in the water at West Island, its not often to see such a late bird "outrank" the HOODED MERGANSER drake on the island's shore. There in that section of the lake ,I guess at least 250 NORTHERN SHOVELERs , many feeding in tight circles. In the Lullwater by the Terrace bridge, a pair GADWALL with the usual COOTS and RUDDY DUCKS.
ON Breeze Hill, most exciting was a patrolling PEREGRINE FALCON, maybe making feeder birds nervous despite being in the woods. A few PINE SISKIN with one PURPLE FINCH was seen; earlier Rafael saw a unusual FIELD SPARROW on the ground with the expected FOX SPARROWS.
Continuing with the feeders, MONK PARAKEETS were near as observed by Rafael. And nearby a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH was busy picking on the pine cones in the pitch pine in the oval lawn

Prospect 11/12
Today all is quiet, my feeling the warm weather has put a damper on any winter bird movement. And evidence that it was warm , a GREAT EGRET makes the highlight ! Seen knee deep in the water at West Island, its not often to see such a late bird "outrank" the HOODED MERGANSER drake on the island's shore. There in that section of the lake ,I guess at least 250 NORTHERN SHOVELERs , many feeding in tight circles. In the Lullwater by the Terrace bridge, a pair GADWALL with the usual COOTS and RUDDY DUCKS.
ON Breeze Hill, most exciting was a patrolling PEREGRINE FALCON, maybe making feeder birds nervous despite being in the woods. A few PINE SISKIN with one PURPLE FINCH was seen; earlier Rafael saw a unusual FIELD SPARROW on the ground with the expected FOX SPARROWS.
Continuing with the feeders, MONK PARAKEETS were near as observed by Rafael. And nearby a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH was busy picking on the pine cones in the pitch pine in the oval lawn

Veterans Day birding : A trifecta of spots, good birds to salute
Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day before WW2, then to remember our World War 1 dead, and the years going forward, it was the 11th hour, and 11th minute this day, when the Treaty of Versailles was signed ending that European conflict, that became a "moment of silence" we Americans since adopted. I tried to do that moment of silence ( got through most of it ), but something happened during that moment: WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS appeared this Indian Summer day.
After a long walk through the Greenwood Cemetery and hours later, a return to the Heath Path connected to Cypress Ave, by the Valentine Grave ( http://tinyurl.com/GWCvalentine )
, there is a massive Spruce tree heavily laden with cones. Yet it was not that spruce but another further up on the Hazel Path intersecting Heath Path, a scrawnier spruce with broken limbs from storm damage, that a stream of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS flew into , readily attacking the pine cones, some of the birds burying themselves immediately into the treetop, a mix of 20 greenish females and bright red males.It made my moment; i texted quickly , and when finished,I looked up: it appeared the very nomadic flock took off. (see the map link of approximate location http://binged.it/WVXooa ).. For anyone wanting to see these birds, do a big sit at this spot, on the Heath Path, since this area of conifers has seen these birds 3x already.
Along with this highly prized species for our region, a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK also appeared, from my view along with Mike Yuan and Paige Linden near the Catacombs. Greenwood was relatively quite except for Siskins with the mainly Junco flock along Crescent Ave near Dell water. The Dell water was very active with sparrows, especially FOX , all using the water to bathe.
A trip over to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden yielded only a PEREGRINE FALCON carrying a pigeon prey while Rob Jett and I delved into our cafe delicacies.
Then , afterwards, a last visit to Prospect Park, where I received Paige Linden's report of EASTERN MEADOWLARK.
Originally reported at the Sparrowbowl, I was headed there when I got stopped quickly at Field 6.It's the EASTERN MEADOWLARK that stopped me in my tracks. Not far from first base, the Lark was in the short right field , playing deep for a "second baseman, where very near at its spot about 60 field players are playing football and soccer. It stood quite aware , erect, and eventually after 10 minutes it flew over the soccer players and landing in right field of field 1 , near the horse loop. I am saying to myself, this is crazy......this bird does not have a strong arm for a rightfielder...
Also reported today , flying over Long Meadow, a BALD EAGLE in midafternoon ( Keir Randall).

I was asked about whether Gateway park , specifically Floyd Bennett Field was open. According to Gateway's website and Facebook page, none of the units are open due to Superstorm Sandy' impact. ( I can imgaine the terrible damage at Fort Tilden , losing all its dunes) Here's the Facebook note

Prospect Nov 10th; "BBC Friends Walk"; transitional period birds
November is typically a transitional time, bridging the late fall into winter migration, and remnants of birds after the early waves this past week. We start to see the appearance of different duck species joining the already present earlier species. For example, HOODED MERGANSERS,2 pairs observed at Duck Island into the Lullwater, joined two hen BUFFLEHEAD near the new island called Music Island, where NORTHERN SHOVELERS glide near or rested on the shoreline boulders.
After the usually active feeders including 2 PINE SISKINS with 7 PURPLE FINCHES, a Saturday Audubon group met up with my small grouping , and together ,we observed a high perched COOPERS HAWK adult, then 5 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS came through , flying up the slope, perching at several limbs and saplings.
I received a report of LINCOLN SPARROW under the Camperdown Elm, spotted by Rob and Tracy .
Not a very active day, but enjoyable for the day's offerings. Outside is better than inside, burn some calories, beathe in good air, and watch birds..
The Brooklyn Bird Club "Friends Walk" took place today and courtesy of Dennis, he submitted his list that group saw which is listed below. The next "Friends Walk" will be the Thanksgiving weekend.These Friends walks is good teamwork exercise ,oftentimes having experienced birders joining in.You don't always need a leader for good company and fun birding with friends.That's the spirit ( and the holidays are coming for good will...)

Great day in prospect today for friends walk. Rusty, Chelly and I met at grand army plaza and were later met by Gil and Elise at the picinic house after birding the vale and midwood. Highlights were a pair of eastern blue birds spotted by Chelly near the music pagoda and a finch feeding frenzy at the feeders to wrap up the morning.

After the usually active feeders including 2 PINE SISKINS with 7 PURPLE FINCHES, a Saturday Audubon group met up with my small grouping , and together ,we observed a high perched COOPERS HAWK adult, then 5 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS came through , flying up the slope, perching at several limbs and saplings.
I received a report of LINCOLN SPARROW under the Camperdown Elm, spotted by Rob and Tracy .
Not a very active day, but enjoyable for the day's offerings. Outside is better than inside, burn some calories, beathe in good air, and watch birds..
The Brooklyn Bird Club "Friends Walk" took place today and courtesy of Dennis, he submitted his list that group saw which is listed below. The next "Friends Walk" will be the Thanksgiving weekend.These Friends walks is good teamwork exercise ,oftentimes having experienced birders joining in.You don't always need a leader for good company and fun birding with friends.That's the spirit ( and the holidays are coming for good will...)

Great day in prospect today for friends walk. Rusty, Chelly and I met at grand army plaza and were later met by Gil and Elise at the picinic house after birding the vale and midwood. Highlights were a pair of eastern blue birds spotted by Chelly near the music pagoda and a finch feeding frenzy at the feeders to wrap up the morning.

Prospect Nov 9th; feeders alive,the blues and rusties in town
The feeders birding dynamics changes on the hour as today attests, PURPLE FINCHES the main draw when I finally visited the site. On the largest feeder, 11 PURPLE FINCHES , 2 males in nice raspberry color shared the sunflower staples with females and 1 PINE SISKIN. This is the most Purple Finches I have seen collectively in Prospect ever I believe. So its looking like a good start for the feeders for winter feeder recreation. A diversity of birds have descended on the site , both on the feeders and on the ground. See the list below. Later, another PINE SISKIN was seen in the sweetgums by West Island shelter and the garage area too with a number of juncos.
The other good news deals with EASTERN BLUEBIRD and RUSTY BLACKBIRD, spotted by birders MikeY, DennisH & Peter C. The former was spotted at 9th St side of the ballfields, and as well Center Drive by the cemetery. During the observation of the bluebirds, Peter C spotted 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRD in Binnen Creek area western sector. From pictures I have received from him, they appeared to be on the pedestrian path. Pics will be posted later.
Good weather is forecasted this weekend with north winds, so an opportunity there for good birding the local park and cemeteries ( especially nowadays for fear of taking the car far with gas rationing and long lines a bummer).

Hi Peter,
I was going to leave the park my normal way and it was blocked off. I went around and toward Nethermead Arches but before I got down that path I noticed bird activity on the grass across from western binnin water had a fairly large bird. I could not get close enough to photograph the Rusty Blackbird as it deserves. I also saw bluebirds in a tree. I believe there are 3 of them, but could be more. A truck came by and scared them away across the field.
Lots of finches eating. Grackles came too. Across the street was a Kestrel. All the activity in the park seems to have shifted to different areas.

Feeder Finch Frenzy
With today's snows, our mindset wanders into winter perspectives. Barely two days after the feeders were set up, an invasion of finches descended on the feeders as witnessed by Rob Bate. With old and reliable news of siskin irruption, why not enjoy them at the thistle feeder ? And throw in lots of Purple Finches as well. If this big move by finches keeps up, I am gonna need to run more often to the store for more thistle....It looks like a long enjoyable winter for sure....We'll make friends with those feeders......
As Humphrey Bogart said in the movie Casablanca. "Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship." .
Oh, check out what the Grackle did....
