Post-nor’easter gates still open on a lovely morning in the park. A few flocks of migrating Blue Jays, and an uncommon for the park Red-bellied Woodpecker on pier 1. The best spot was the rocks by the pier 1 marsh, where a Yellow-breasted Chat showed well along with a Lincoln’s sparrow and assorted warblers.

We nearly walked into a Red-tailed Hawk on Pier, who didn’t mind our presence, and caught up with a few more sparrows. After I left, the group picked up more warblers and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. More to come as we get into fall.

20 attendees, 35 species.

Hi Peter,

We had another great walk today, with about 35 people seeing a total of 64 species. A 65th species—a Hooded Warbler—was found at the Sparrow Bowl by the last of the group after I had to break off at 12:30. So I think that counts.

There was a great diversity of migrants—still many warblers around, 13 species in all, as well as some later migrants like Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Golden-crowned Kinglet. There were also two Green-winged Teals and a Gadwall on the lake. But undoubtedly the highlight was the group of nine or 10 Common Nighthawks that passed through the low clouds over the Long Meadow, east to west, a little before noon. We then found a Philadelphia Vireo in the woods just south of the Tennis House, a spot that has been reliably active this season.

Here's our list: https://ebird.org/checklist/S397534088. Thanks to Angie for co-leading and all those who joined with a lot of enthusiasm and excitement.

Always smaller than I expect them to be: The proportions tend to make me mentally search for something the size of a chicken or a Clapper Rail, when really it’s the size of a robin, or in some ways even smaller. I kept it off the Discord at first at the suggestion of another birder—it would be easy to crowd a little too close to the bird so it never left the reeds—but seems like the cat is out of the bag on eBird, and it has its own island of grass to retreat to whenever it wants, so it could be a worse situation for this bird. Hi Peter,

We had a great day yesterday on the Tuesday walk. It seemed like precipitation overnight grounded some migrants, because at the start of the walk we came across a fast-moving flock of warblers that had just entered the park. This would be repeated throughout the morning in several locations around the lake and along the Nethermead and Long Meadow. Fall was in the air, quite literally; the equinox was later in the day.

It was the best warbler showing of our season so far, with 16 species in all, including two Tennessee, two Bay-breasted, and a Blackburnian. Every flock seemed to have in it three or four Northern Parulas. Another highlight was a roosting Common Nighthawk above the jewelweed patch on the south side of the lake, where hummingbirds are currently ever-present; the nighthawk had stuck around a day. Thanks to Radka for pointing out the location for the group.

Here's our list of sightings: https://ebird.org/checklist/S395301834. We had 61 species overall.

- Comments: "Standing in the reeds at the edge of the water, on a log. Golden colored with vertical streaks. Size of maybe a goose; slender with long neck/ intense eyes. Saw a face-on view with the beak upturned to the sky, and then saw a side profile of it as it skulked away into the thick reeds. It seemed to point its beak to the sky when it saw me, I put down my binoculars for a moment, and when I looked back, it was skulking away."

- Comments: "Whatever that so-called "effect" is when you go looking for a rarity and by virtue of careful observation and multiple sets of eyeballs suddenly find another, that's what happened here. After Ed Crowne and I had satisfactorily gorged on extended views of the Connecticut warbler as it wandered unconcerned in the shady grasses, we stood around for awhile discussing our respective recent trips to Bahia. When I idly put my glasses up on some avian object in the adjacent cherry tree, I was able to say "hey Ed, not to interrupt, but we have a Philly Vireo up here." We quickly got the remaining Connecticut-viewers on the bird, which was a small, brightish yellow vireo with a bold white eyestripe and dark lores, a not-at-all confusing example of its taxon."

- Comments: "Uncommon fall migrant, but somehow did not have any of these this past spring. Really frustrating encounter, as is often the case with these during migration, at least for me. Seen very briefly near carousel, and I stuck around for a while to try to refind it with no luck. Small but stocky passerine with bright yellow head and spectacles, bold wingbars, and white undertail. Photos are complete garbage but *might* be diagnostic."
