Hello Peter,

Here are some photos from today. The Pine Warblers were in the Ravine and I saw at least 2. I got the tip through social media. 

I saw the Osprey swooping around from Dog Beach. It  was performing some fancy flying. My shoulder is preventing me from shooting at that angle very well. Then Osprey tilted and I knew that I was going to lose focus. I focused on the water and almost guessed right. It was in and out very quickly with a fish. It looked at me and decided to eat the fish elsewhere.

This year I have encountered 2 Canada Geese with neck bands.

The first one was seen on the ballfields, and neck band is orange with white letters & numbers. It read Y3T4. The bird is a male.  It was banded at Varennes, Quebec; Canada.  The bird was too young to fly when banded in 2013.  First time seen by myself in the Park was 22 January 2015.  Last time seen was 30 March 2015.

The second one was first seen around Prospect Lake.  The neck band is yellow with black letters & numbers.  It read NA08. The bird is a female. She hatched in 2005 or earlier. She was banded at Coney Island, NY.  First time seen was on 13 March 2015.  Last time seen was 30 March 2015.

By the way, both birds were seen forraging together at the ballfields with a large flock of geese.

More firsts GREG and EABL

More first arrivals this morning, one by land and one by sea ( well...water) with appearance of  EASTERN BLUEBIRD and GREAT EGRET.

The EASTERN BLUEBIRD reported by Sean Zimmer, that I reacted by his report at lunchtime, was seen in the trees between the east slope of the Tennis House and the Upper Pool elm grove. I spotted the bluebird in trees on the north side of the cross path thru Long Meadow by the wood bench that overlooks the Sparrow Bowl not far from the Tennis house. It was a single male bird.Thanks to Sean for the heads up.

Around the lake as I passed by in my work vehicle, I spotted a GREAT EGRET perched on Duck Island facing the Gazebo.A lone GREAT BLUE HERON was in the same area on Duck Island. But more Great Blues more closely perched on Three Sisters Islands adds more beauty...

After the early morning rains, I ventured into the Park, with the hope to see some new Spring migrants.  But no luck.  Only 1 sps of warbler, Pine.

Nothing spectacular in the Lake, except for 5 Great Blue Herons. The Common Merganser are stil there, and so the Ring-necked Ducks. At the Vale, a large flock od Cedar Waxwings.

Surprise from the ballfields!!  From a large feeding flock of Canada Geese, 2 of them had neck bands.  Both of them I have already reported to the BBL.  An history of these geese later.

Brooklyn is great birding!!!

It was nice seeing you today in the park. It was a very good day for birding. The high-light was a Common Loon (thanks to Linda) which was a lifer for me. I have been dreaming about seeing this bird since I first heard its haunting call (or song). Also I saw few birds for the first time this spring including: a Pine Warbler, An Osprey, a Laughing Gull and Green Winged Teal (thanks to you). and for the first time since I started birding two years ago, I saw the five species of Woodpeckers on the same day. They were all between the Ravine and the Music Pagoda.

the walk home

A deviation from my usual walk home from the Tennis House proved productive. And for the purpose as well to re find the Common Loon also succeeded.

The Pools was my first objective in an attempt to see if Green winged Teal was still around.Finding WOOD DUCKS on both Pools, I did find the teals, stuck in the east corner of the Upper pool; the pair was working the muddy shoreline ,feeding vigorously.

Continuing on through the Nethermead, as a few EASTERN PHOEBES popped up here and there,I noted two raptor flyovers: an OSPREY over the Binnen Pool, then a fast moving AMERICAN KESTREL over west Nethermead.

Arriving at Prospect Lake, for my hope for Loon, that waited a moment.But first a scan of the lake bought forth the season's first LAUGHING GULL in the midst of the gull flock.Gus Keri then came with news he found the Loon, diving by Music Island ,then lost sight of it. I did much better , a resting COMMON LOON ,in spectacular plumage, just off the Peninsula thumb.it eventually glided past the thumb toward an area east of Three Sisters Islands,within a cove with a red buoy. A great looking bird, sometimes depending on who you ask a bird for the year given the circumstances; the COMMON MERGANSERS were nearby. As I headed home,from the west shore I saw a flying DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANT fly out of West Island ,just above the settled in loon.

And last, there's now 6 GREAT BLUE HERONs resting on Three Sisters Islands,the hottest area on the lake.

COMMON LOON in Prospect Lake

A great ending to my work day. Stopping at the lake to show some good ducks to my coworker Steven, namely the BUFFLEHEAD, Ring Necks and Common Mergansers, my coworker pointed to a bird swimming towards us at south lake shore just east of Three Sisters Islands and to my surprise, I exclaimed "why its a COMMON LOON ! "

Not only that ,a full breeding plumage COMMON LOON with its classic throat ring and checkered back, a true rarity for us here at Prospect to get such a bird we typically see as flyovers.

The diving loon went under for quite a time, and reemerged at areas between the Three Sisters Islands and Duck Island , also in the Peninsula Cove. We lost sight of the bird near the rink shoreline.

Two terrific birds today , Black Vulture and Common Loon.

Also seen were the 4 COMMON MERGANSERS, 9 RING NECKED DUCKS ( 3 at Three Sisters, 6 at Duck Island)

Black Vulture Prospect

I looked up and saw a very flappy, short winged vulture, raising my suspicions that it was a Black Vulture.On my work site at the Prospect Park entrance at PPSW Ave and 16th Street/Windsor Place, I hurried and grabbed my bins from the vehicle and looked at it quickly.

Yep, a BLACK VULTURE flying west towards Greenwood Cemetery. Always nice to get the first bird of its kind for "Prospark"





A nice observation this morning was at Three Sistsers Islands with 5 GREAT BLUE HERONS together on the water snag facing the lake.

Father away , near Duck Island, the 3 COMMON MERGANSERS are well seen and I beleive the Ring Neck Ducks as well ....

Brooklyn is great birding!!!

Objective : Pine warbler

Returning home about 4:30 after a weekend visiting my sister in southeast Pennsylvania , I made an attempt into Prospect for my favorite warbler.

After a scan of the lake still showing the COMMON MERGANSERS, the islands hold a pair of herons. Both Three Sisters and Duck Islands revealed 4 GREAT BLUE HERONS;an AMERICAN WIGEON pair and from the distance ,maybe 8 RING NECKED DUCKS along the shores of Duck Island.

Then onward to Binnen Bridge.This spot had the last report of Pine Warbler ,from Isabel Conte' s tweet when I got off the Staten Island Expressway. After some searching, I finally found my target, a bright PINE WARBLER at the entrance to the East Wood building. Soon that bird moved around, ending up in a mature Sugar Maple in the middle of the Lily Pool meadow just south of the East Wood Tunnel. But my bonus for not only a Pine but two birds! Sweet success!

I took a long while enjoying the PINE WARBLERS in the vicinity of the Sugar Maple spot. Both birds worked the woody back area, then above the path down from the tunnel. An interesting moment In the Sugar Maple occurred when a breeding plumage YELLOW BELLIED SAPSUCKER followed briefly one of the Pines. In setting sun, these birds were brighter to enjoy.

As Dorothy of the Wizard of Oz says: "There's no place like home"

Also noted, a number of EASTERN PHOEBES are seen and I found a pair of WOOD DUCK in the Upper Pool.A PIED BILLED GREBE remains in the Lake

PS. Pine warbler is not my first of year,since I had a number of them in Florida in January plus 7 other warbler species including Yellow throated. But a Brooklyn Pine Warbler  is a tradition.
