Prospect sightings today
The early stages of fall migration sees the trickle of stuff, along with some common species. 5 species warbs reported today so far.

Sorry for an out of range bird posting but I just had to show it...
From my 2 day trip to southern/central New Jersey," the bird" ( my third XTFC lifer in last 2 years) from Whitesbog [ http://www.whitesbog.org/ ] which I saw the 3rd time yesterday as I was driving out the parking lot of this formerly large cranberry farm , now a living museum and blueberry farm as well as a terrific shorebird spot which I saw Bairds Sandpiper and at least 20 Solitary Sandpipers and in the tern dept 18 Gull-billed terns , many sitting on the ground in the drained impoundments. I will post stuff to my facebook page in time scenery pics. (Got 20 species shorebirds, by the way, mostly at Edward G Forsthye NWR or old name "Brigatine" )

While birding in Prospect Park this morning, Peter Colen and I had an
interesting experience.
We had walked up Lookout Hill to the Butterfly Meadow where there seemed to be a
bit of activity on and within the assorted sunflowers, buddleia and other
wildflowers. In the weeds below an oak tree at the East end of the meadow I
spotted a gnatcatcher chasing a mostly yellow bird. It turned out to be a
"Lawrence's" Warbler. We walked over to get a closer look, then spotted a
Blue-winged Warbler in the oak tree above. The "Lawrence's" Warbler was
subsequently chased across the meadow by one of many goldfinches in that area. A
moment later the first blue-winged was joined by a second. I decided to circle
around to the opposite side of the small meadow to track down the Lawrence's. As
we walked the footpath on the North side of this opening on top of Lookout Hill
I noticed a small bird feeding down low and just behind the meadow's surrounding
fence. I think I may have made an audible noise when I focused in on a
Golden-winged Warbler! I haven't seen a golden-winged in Prospect Park in many
years. My last Lawrence's Warbler here was probably 15 years ago and,
ironically, in this same location. This is the only time in my 20+ years of
birding that I've seen Blue-winged Warbler, Golden-winged Warbler and their
bastard offspring, Lawrence, together. I'm glad that there was someone else
present to share this rare family portrait.

I was able to make several pictures of this bird this morning. It is banded and I think it's a Northern Red Bishop??? it was perched in front the light post by the well house. around 9:30 this morning. right after i made the photos, my battery died. had to run home and recharge camera to see them. i have several besides this one.

I'm writing to call your attention to the release of Gateway National Recreation Area's Draft General Management Plan (GMP) and Environmental Impact Statement and the great victory for the Jamaica Bay Greenway as a highlighted component of Gateway's preferred vision for the park!
In the Draft GMP, Gateway has selected "Alternative B: Discovering Gateway" as the NPS Preferred Alternative, which "provides the widest range of activities and most recreation opportunities in dispersed locations throughout the park. New connections would be forged with park lands and communities adjacent and nearby Gateway...more convenient and affordable park access is developed through trail connections, bicycle infrastructure, public transit, and waterborne transportation." (Chapter 2, p. 77).
"The extensive network of trails would provide connections from adjacent parks and neighborhoods by tying into the Jamaica Bay Greenway" (p. 78)

Prospect 1st of season fall PHILLY VIREO; Prospect reports inc BWWA
This morning at around 10 am , Abe Borker reported PHILADELPHIA VIREO near the Peninsula tip on the Lullwater side ( facing rink). Other birds seen in the vicinity were NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, YELLOW WARBLER, WARBLING VIREO, AMERICAN REDSTART.
I was able to get more info from Abe on the location thru Facebook
( he's leaving for Chile and Antarctica today )

Also a fledgling ( short undeveloped tail) YELLOW WARBLER at the tip as well as a female adult in midsection. On the way out when work beckoned, another BLACK&WHITE WARBLER ( both females) in the west Lullwater.

Hi Peter-
Besides other previously reported species saw my first Blue winged warbler on lullwater slope near crabapple trees (lookout hill side). Also saw juvenile thrush that might have been a wood thrush but hard to say since juv. in same area as blue winged - it was being chased by robins.
Also northern waterthrush - ravine below waterfall; 3 black & white warblers; 2 redstarts- slope after nethermead arch and yellow warblers continuing on Lullwater. Two sets of balt. oriole families on lullwater this morning.

Prospect late eve stroll
The most music tonight came from ,namely,Music Island,where BELTED KINGFISHER,SPOTTED SANDPIPER,3 WOOD DUCKS hum med along, with nearby GREEN HERON on its favorite post at the east end of Duck Island.
Another Green Heron around the Peninsula thumb, and 3 EASTERN KINGBIRDS by the pink beach made it an enjoyable productive stroll. A GREAT EGRET at 3 Sisters Islands supplemented the list.

Bizarre sighting Prospect's Amberbill pool
IN likely the most bizarre summer sighting and given the location, an immature COMMON MERGANSER was spotted by Rob Bate in the early afternoon. I came after Rob's tweet and saw the bird as well. Ambergill Pool is not known as a duck spot ( except for Mallards) because of its tiny size. But to see something like COMMON MERGANSER now and in that location is truly way out of line for the season.
ON the mostly brownish bird, we could see the whitish line mark below the long mandible, ( not red for similar Red-breasted Merg), breast/ neck was brownish ( dark) not white for RB

Hi Peter-
I got busy and did not report this but Monday I was in the park for a bird walk after a long hiatus (just too hot) and on the way in from Grand Army Plaza on the path I saw a chipping sparrow feeding a juvenile near the crabapple tree on the road side. Do we typically get chipping sparrows breeding in the park?
